Barcelona is a city in Spain and is the capital of the Catalonia region. It is placed on the Meditterranean sea, bordered by two rivers. It’s the second biggest city in the country, after only Madrid. The metropolitan population is 4 million, but the city-limit population is only 1.5 million. Its history dates back to 4,000 years ago, when it was settled by farmers. Romans, Visigoths and the Moors all ruled the city over time. It has played a long and important part in Spanish history, and its architecture and culture reflect this. It is one of the richest and most interesting cities in Europe, and is also one of the warmest and most cosmopolitan. It flourished during the 1992 Olympics, the infrastructure and global focus pumped energy and money into the city and allowed it to grow in world stature to something of a World city.
There are many things to see in the city. The most important is La Rambla – the biggest and most popular street in the city. Nearby is the Barri Gotic – the Gothic quarter, one of the oldest and most interesting parts of the city. La Sagrada Familla is probably the most famous building in the city, the famous architect Gaudi’s unfinished masterpiece. Also consider visiting Montjuic, the hill overlooking the city, which includes a huge fortress.
